Orinda Residence

This unique project involved the merging of two lots. The clients’ long-time place of residence, a beautiful mid-century modern house was located on one lot, and the owners wished to “replicate” it onto a recently acquired adjacent lot. The solution for this addition project was a harmonious combination of new construction and the remodeling of the original house. A “floating” bridge was designed to host the dining room which elegantly connected the new addition and the existing house.

In addition to the love the clients had for the original house, they have a special connection to a large redwood tree which had been planted by the family years ago. The new design gently surrounds the redwood and carefully placed windows allow onlookers to contemplate its beauty from several different perspectives.

This Project was designed and developed in collaboration with Philip Liang, Design Director at ODS Architecture in Emeryville, California.
